When I filled my truck with additional gas tanks, water, food, food and toilet supplies, I did not have any idea if I would even return home.

It wasn’t until I arrived at Raleigh that I heard that I-26 was again open to traffic in the region. Not 30 minutes later, I heard from my brother for the first time, who told me that my family was safe.

But many families in our community did not have so much happiness. They lost everything, including their loved ones.

Southern Appalachia remained rebuilt, but the progress we experienced must be celebrated. Cities are reopened, shops are renewed and families begin to feel new normal.
