Summer Ben Shelton came to a sudden end on Friday afternoon.
Moving at the decisive fifth set against French Adrian Mannarino, Shelton, after encouraging from his father / coach, pulled out from the US, his title finished in the third round.
The discomfort began in the introductory game of the fourth set. Shelton has just provided a 2-1 lead in the detriment of his own body, crashed to the ground after delivering the decisive point. He reconciled his father, who also serves as his coach, as he tried to play through it. Shelton continued to go back and forth with Otim, adjusting the gaming plan to the one who relied exclusively on the online victory.
Medical interruption early in the fourth set did not help, but painkillers broke it through a loss of 6-4. Letting the court, Shelton could be heard by saying his box that it was “the worst pain in life I ever felt in life.” Once the severity of the injury became obvious, Shelton’s father changed the course and invited his son to retire.
Former gator and world no. 6 The court left the court on a constant language such as tears began to flow. Shelton drove in the top 5 this summer – it will pass Jack Draper, despite the exit of the third round – and that it may be the largest favorite that did not call Alcaraz or sinners to win open. He just won his first 1,000 tournament master, and Shelton is a favorite crowd, especially in the American soil.
Before the injury, Shelton was in control.
“Honestly, he would probably win that match,” Mannarino said. “It’s because of him and happiness for me. I don’t really know what to say right now. I’m happy to have passed, but I wish him the best, of course.”
Shelton did not miss the Grand Straw fourth round since last year, when he was open, when he lost an intensive battle for American Frances Tiafoe’s colleagues. It is also the earliest exit for World Transmission 6 in a 64 man tournament or greater than April.
The good news is that Shelton does not lose any points from this injury, at least from now. The bad news is that it is unclear how long it will take. Masters of Shanghai in September and Parisian Masters in October are the last two events in the year 1,000 points. Missing both events would hurt his rank.
