Zuni, NM – this summer, Zuni enrichment project brought two loved sports opportunities to its youngest athletes: their third annual T-Call league and its inaugural mini-basketball league. Enabled with the support of Nike, misuse of substances and mental health services (Samhsa) and a new Department of Health in Mexico, these leagues gave players with new opportunities to learn, play and succeed.

Between the two leagues, dozens of 4- and five-year-olds, I grew the court and field with the constant support of ZIEP staff, 16 community coaches in the range of 17 to 63 and enthusiastic family. The mini-basketball league levels 8-31 on Tuesday practice and Thursday Thursday in Gymnasium with Twin Buttes Ciber Academy, while League T-Ball Ran 9. July. 1 with Wednesday practice and Friday on Friday on Ho’n A: Van Park.
According to Tyler Sič, Ziev’s coordinator of physical activity, a completely new mini-basketball league was welcomed by smiling, laughter and cheering.

“At the first day of the game, we had a 20-minute exercise session, and then 25 minutes of play,” he said. “It is occasionally needed to help young people with borders and play good defense, but many have achieved how families cheering them on them. After that, the teams played four seven-minute quarters on days in the game.”
Esther Sipza, the leader of the physical activity of ZIEP, said the reward was to see one of the dreams of young projects that came to life.
“It was great to see the small 4- and five-year-olds enjoying something new,” she said. “Coaches easily adapted to our adding mini-basketball. We had fun together!”

Cheienne Leekyti told his child, Aubrey Calavaz, enjoyed Mini-basketball, because it was indoors and happened in the evening. She said she also appreciated coaches.
The coaches of “Aubre’s trainers were very rise when he came to motivate,” Lekit explained. “They performed all the children well and saw them enjoying the mini basketball was the upper level.”
Scott Schvendner said his child, Nakoa, every day, was excited to go into practice, because he enjoyed being around his friends. Nakoa participated in both leagues this summer.
“Nakoa came out of her shy shell after she got used to her teammates, and he made a lot of friends,” Schvendner said. “Coaches in both leagues help our small ones increase confidence in themselves and it is phenomenal.

“One day in practice, Nakoa spoke to his coaches and teammates that it was my birthday,” Schvenner continued. “They sang a happy birthday, and that was something special.”
When asked about his flight, Nakoa said, “I miss my friends and coaches and hit baseball and shot at basketball!”
The child of Eustace, Akai Taylor, also played in both leagues this summer.
“We got up early in the morning, and akai was always ready to go to his practices or ball games,” she said. “He enjoyed the mini basketball because it was even in the evening. I think we’ve never missed the practice. They would remind us!

“He enjoyed playing both sports because he had different peers in each team and did not feel absent,” she continued. “Mini-basketball was new to him and picked up some new skills and enjoyed learning a new sport.”
The coaches shared that they were inspired by children’s enthusiasm and growth. One noticed: “The growth they made within only two days was amazing,” while others, “he made me happy to see the kids that everyone smiles and interact with each other.” A third of the “community gathered to cheer on young and brought positive energy that the children needed. Living and laughter filled the room – together with love.”

These summer leagues are part of Ziev’s broader initiative for the youth sports sports initiative, which annually engages more than 500 children in football, flag football, basketball, mini-basketball and T-ball. In addition to sports, these programs provide mentoring and companionship in Kamaradrublija infusions with the strong spirit of Zuni community.
