Film Hronicles Right of Ballroom Culture via Southeast Asia Through Three Key Images: Sun from Thailand, Teddi from Malaysia and Philippines. The documentary investigates that these performers build a lively queer community across borders while maintaining connections to Balroz roots in New York.
Chan Sze-Wei has become involved in the project through personal connection. When a friend of the sun began to develop a regional knit community, the Singapore Film Creator was called to document the growth of movement.
The documentary is wearing a profound personal significance for Chan. “As a strange and queer parent who never fit, communities in this film gave me the courage to go out as a non-binary individual,” said the director. “We made this film to celebrate the strength of the activism of the ballog, Alishi and belonging.”
The project is an international effort for co-productions that extend four countries: Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia and Germany. The production team includes Alemberg Ang, whose recent loans include “Renoir” (CANNES 2025) and “Some nights I feel like walking” (Tallinn 2024), next to Iasmin C. Rams (“Go cuddle”) and So if u (“Dream and dying”, winner Locarno Golden Leopard).
Funding arose from several sources, including Singapore Film Commission, Hesse Film, DMZ Development Fund, and Biff’s Asian Cinema Fund, among others. The project also received development support through the main industrial platforms, including Cannes Docs, a SHEFFIELD DOCFEST MEERMARKET and the first lab.
