ONot from the most important stories in the country in the country in 2025. The celebration is 100-year-old Grand Ole Opra.
But that turning point, which arrives on November 25, would not exist without another, formerly one hundred years: Launch of VSM-AM Nashville, 5. October 1925.
Despite the time, let the same aesthetics at work at the station at the station 2025. year that was there when it started in 1925. years, according to the current VSM GM / Content Director Eric MarcumIncluding focus on employment from within and commitment to its technological history. Marcum has made observations during a one-hour conversation 4. September with the south of the south: vsm and making the music city of the author Craig Havighurst At that Truitt, who knew the smartest people in the webinar room.
Given the age station, 30-something margum is a relative newcomer, only aware when he noticed the VSM microphone on the 2008 Ricky Album and Kentucky Thunder album in honor of Certification in Bluegrass – Tribute to 1946 and 1947.
“I’ve never seen calls to the radio station that was only three letters of calls,” Marcum said. “All I’ve ever heard of all my life was mostly at that point and four letters of calls started with K. So it was my introduction, indeed, it was my introduction.”
Marcum began in VSM in 2013. After graduating from the University of Purdue, shared some communion with George D. Hai, PD cells, which was founded by Opra. They were both born in Indiana, and they both joined the staff in the 20th, although the hay began with more ladders when he arrived. In just two years, Seno passed from VMC Memphis to Vls Chicago – where he founded the National Barn Dance and recognized the reader’s favorite in the air – to VSM, joining the station exactly five weeks after the original application. Hai opened the Opra less than three weeks later, representing Fiddler, Uncle Jimmy Thompson, who performed for an hour.
Hai’s two-year broadcasting progress works partially in parallel with Marcum ascent to Ranges at VSM. Marcum started as a board operator, advanced in constantly in marketing, and then traffic, before serving as an assistant PD, a morning producer and at the end of GM.
“It was probably a new job at work every two to three years,” Marcum said.

Longerness is long encouraged at VSM. In addition to the speech, Ernest TUBB Midnite Jamboree was broadcast – the work of another long work – more than 75 years. Numerous staff also maintained about 25 years or more, including Bill Codi (30 years), Keith Bilbrei (30), Eddie Stubbs (25), Landfill manager Vito Pellettieri (43) and music hall of late land (47).
“The way in which VSM and National Life (and Insurance), its home company, in the 1960s, and the 1960s talked about how much mentoring was,” Havighurst said, “Havighurst said,” Havighurst said it was on to explore his book. “People stayed from loyalty and because they were promoted, their career development was really healthy.”
VSM’s call letters were an acronym for the national life slogan – “My Shield Millions” – and the station was used to improve brand identity.
He worked was the first living live and VSM also used a 2.00 pound transmission transmitter to highlight that strength. The audience has not previously connected to the real-time community – the news only spread through the newspaper or word in the mouth – and the station used to broadcast the sound of the American train every afternoon. The new technology fascinated the listeners, some of which knew that it was the end of her working day when the train whistled after 5 pm
“We’d mean today,” What is it? What big thing is that? “” Said Havighurst. “But they set the imagination on the imagination. The train was symbolic and felt vividly. It was just a real radio – the real, atmospheric, and that was so good … it became a daily feature at VSM almost 10 years.”
It was one of the first – if not the first – instances of the station broadcast wireless sound in the home studio, not using the telephone cable. Other technological advanced advanced tories followed, including the installation of historical broadcasters in 1932. years and its inclusion with consecutive platforms, including network radio, broadcasting and cable television and internet.
“One of the great things about VSM engineers over time that everyone knew the importance of this radio station,” Marcum said. “Every engineer left this radio station in better shape than they arrived. I think it’s just fascinating, and I can also monitor the programming and sales department. You always want to find it.”
As VSM celebrates the centenary, the station launched a 10-part of the VSM memory series mainly prematviated accounts about their history. The final, living war of air at 10. October.
Meanwhile, VSM itself, such as a vessel, has an intense mission to represent a large picture of the country in its programming. The classic country, Bluegrass, current artists and new acts are presented in programming with the story that keeps it together. Three of the four announcements Opri – Cody, Kelly Sutton and Charlie Mattos – Form the Morning Tim VSM, which benefits from overlap.
“There are a 75% chance that the host would host our morning show an emission earlier,” Marcum said. “They take the experience of watching Jelly Roll interaction with Brad Paislei, watching that Malone Interaction with Vince Gill and they can bring that story in the morning show and tell you exactly what you feel exactly.”
So, VSM remains, after 100 years, the most common station in the history of music countries.
