Cato Kusters’ ‘Julian’ is the story of the global state of the same-sex marriage

When did you first become aware of Fleur and Julian’s story?

Soon after Julian’s death, Fleur wrote a book, and then she did a little press tour; I heard her talking on the radio. I had to park my car by the road, because I was just inebriated. She is a powerful speaker. I have read a book and day after I finished the book, I met Fleur – we knew some people together.

Later, I later learned that she was already in conversation that “Julian” turned into a film. I didn’t think about my options.

The story moves from euphoria to something more melancholy and grave. How did you deal with switching between those tones?

In the center of the story is this big love between these two people. You may see it somewhere else. But what is so crazy in this story is that there are so many contrast elements. At the very height of his life, it turned out to be mortally ill. We wanted to find a way, structurally, to have happiness and sadness always back, so it will affect and fear each other. That’s why we’re leaving all the time.

In the US, at least there are a lot of fear that queer rights are moving backwards. How does the landing in 2025 change how “Julian” will be viewed?

Fortunately and unfortunately, it will always be a time capsule. We end the film by saying that it was 22 years in 2017. years (where same-sex marriage was legal), now it is 38. But we are watching this film, we don’t know where it will be.

It’s terrible to watch what happens where you live. But we are very happy to have a premiere of the film on that continent. It’s nice to see that a little shock like “Julian”, it’s not just needed, that’s welcome. I was curious to see where to go, because there was their project, then there was a book, and now this film is. It is a way of smoking the story as much as we can, to send it over boundaries and give it as much visibility as possible. That is, in the end, what Fleur and Julian were all about.

How does it feel like you have your debit feature to play on TIFF?

So I truly looking forward to the festival. They were so hot – it is very different from the competition world of film festivals. The film has not yet been released, not in Belgium, not anywhere, but the things that came to us all are fully worth it.

And so happy I can go back to Fleur and Julian. It’s a very target: it feels like a new chapter in the project that started so many years ago.
